Roller forming process for thermostat assembly

Wall of thermostat assembly

WHAT
The housing needs to be formed around the guiding part of a thermostat assembly. The rubber insert is held between housing and guiding part and needs enough compression to provide a reliable seal for the wax. Forming the lip of the housing must be possible in short cycle time, and with minimal axial force to prevent collapsing the housing wall.

WHY
Prior to contacting BalTec, the thermostat was formed with a press, which lead to collapsing the wall and loosing material.

HOW
Successful forming is possible with the roll forming process, as the material being formed is gently folded and not collapsed. This allows complete overlap of the guiding part and proper closing of the housing is achievable, without swelling of the housing outer diameter. The advantage is a higher production efficiency, reduction in inspection efforts and scrap.
